| Physical Description | Taryn Vey looks exactly like what she is: someone who has spent most of her adult life aboard starships. She is neither particularly tall nor physically imposing, with a lean build developed more from climbing maintenance ladders, crawling beneath navigation consoles and hauling equipment than deliberate exercise. Her dark auburn hair falls a little below her shoulders, although it is rarely worn loose while she is working. Usually it is pulled into a hurried ponytail or twisted into a loose knot that inevitably begins falling apart halfway through a shift. Her grey-green eyes are perhaps her most noticeable feature. They are constantly moving, taking in displays, people, exits and anything else that might become important. Taryn dresses for practicality rather than fashion. Her usual clothing consists of fitted cargo trousers, comfortable boots, a shirt or vest layered beneath a battered brown flight jacket, and a utility belt containing several tools she insists are essential despite nobody remembering seeing her use half of them. A small navigation datapad is almost always somewhere on her person. She has a thin scar running through her left eyebrow, acquired during what she describes only as: "A disagreement involving a loading crane, an idiot and gravity." She refuses to elaborate on which participant was the idiot. |
Family
Allegiance & Status
| Affiliation | Wayfarer's Promise | |
| Affiliation Type | Civilian | |
| Political Alignment | Independent / Unaligned Taryn has no formal political allegiance and considers herself a civilian spacer rather than a supporter of any particular government or political movement. She has little affection for the Galactic Empire, particularly its increasing regulation of civilian shipping, navigation restrictions and intrusive customs procedures, but she does not initially consider herself anti-Imperial. She is certainly not a Rebel. Her personal philosophy is largely pragmatic: governments rise and fall, while ordinary people still need to work, trade and survive. Her experiences aboard the Wayfarer's Promise may gradually change that position. | |
| Chain Code | 1444-5889-885 -Registered Taryn possesses a legitimate Imperial chain code identifying her as Taryn Vey, Human, Corellian citizen and civilian spacer. Her chain code is genuine rather than forged, having been issued during the transition from Republic identification systems to Imperial chain-code requirements. There is currently nothing attached to her identity that would normally warrant Imperial detention. Her employment history lists several civilian shipping companies and independent vessels, although there are some gaps caused by captains and ships whose records were incomplete, lost or deliberately vague. Taryn guards the legitimacy of her chain code carefully. Having one genuinely clean identity aboard the Wayfarer's Promise can be extremely useful when dealing with customs officials, docking authorities and Imperial bureaucracy. | |

Personality & Traits
| General Overview | Taryn is confident, practical and possessed of an extremely dry sense of humour. Very little visibly rattles her. That doesn't mean she doesn't experience fear. Taryn simply believes panic is something that can be dealt with after the immediate problem has been solved. During emergencies she becomes noticeably quieter. Jokes disappear, her attention narrows and she concentrates almost entirely on whatever problem is in front of her. Taryn has spent enough time aboard merchant vessels to distrust grand causes and people promising to change the galaxy. Governments change. Flags change. People with guns continue telling everyone else what to do. Her opinion of the Empire is therefore initially more cynical than ideological. She doesn't like Imperial interference, excessive inspections or the increasing restrictions placed upon independent shipping, but she doesn't consider herself a revolutionary. She certainly isn't a Rebel. At least, not when she joins the Wayfarer's Promise. Taryn also has a deeply independent streak. She dislikes being micromanaged and reacts poorly to people questioning her professional competence without reason. Give her a destination and she'll find a route. Tell her exactly how to calculate that route and there may be an argument. Despite her deliberately detached exterior, Taryn has one significant weakness. Children. She can walk away from adults making stupid decisions. She finds it considerably harder to walk away when children might suffer because of those decisions. |

| Strengths & Weaknesses | Strengths Exceptional Astrogator Navigation isn't simply something Taryn does. It is how she understands the galaxy. She can calculate standard hyperspace routes quickly, but her real talent lies in complicated navigation involving multiple short jumps, poorly documented systems and routes that aren't routinely used by commercial traffic. Unconventional Navigation Taryn has accumulated copies of old navigation charts, obsolete freight routes and records of hyperspace beacons no longer appearing on standard civilian databases. Some are decades out of date. Some are probably illegal. All of them are useful. Imperial Patrol Awareness Years aboard independent freighters have taught Taryn how Imperial customs operations work. She understands patrol patterns, inspection procedures and the kinds of behaviour likely to attract attention. She can't guarantee avoiding Imperial scrutiny. She can dramatically improve the odds. Cool Under Pressure The worse the situation becomes, the calmer Taryn appears. Spacer Experience Taryn has worked aboard enough ships to understand cargo operations, basic maintenance, communications procedures and emergency systems. She's capable of helping almost anywhere aboard a civilian vessel when necessary. Good Memory Routes, systems, docking codes and spatial relationships stick in her head unusually well. Weaknesses Average Pilot Taryn can fly. Technically. She can launch, dock and keep a ship moving in the correct direction. Combat manoeuvres are another matter entirely. Her preferred explanation is: "I tell you where we're going. Someone else makes sure we don't hit anything on the way." Independent Taryn occasionally interprets instructions as suggestions. Suspicious Trust does not come easily to her. When information doesn't make sense, she notices. That could eventually become particularly problematic for Allore. Protective of Children Taryn's carefully maintained emotional distance tends to collapse where children are concerned. Not a Fighter She knows how to use a blaster and carries one when necessary, but she isn't a soldier. Against trained Imperial troops, bounty hunters or professional mercenaries, her first instinct is escape rather than confrontation. |
Personal Dossier
| Personal History | Taryn Vey was born on Corellia into a family that had worked around starships for generations. Her father maintained civilian navigation systems while her mother worked in freight administration. Neither travelled extensively, but both worked around people who did. Taryn grew up listening to spacers. Pilots told stories about distant worlds. Freighter captains complained about customs officials. Navigators argued about hyperspace calculations. By twelve, Taryn could identify most major Corellian shipping routes. By fifteen, she could calculate them. At seventeen she left Corellia aboard a bulk freighter. She never really came back. Over the following decade Taryn worked aboard numerous vessels: cargo haulers, passenger transports, independent freighters and several ships whose captains maintained extremely creative interpretations of shipping regulations. She became very good. More importantly, she became known among certain independent captains as someone capable of getting a ship somewhere without necessarily travelling along the route everyone expected. That reputation became considerably more valuable following the formation of the Galactic Empire. Navigation restrictions increased. Imperial inspections became more common. Certain systems became difficult to visit without explaining why you were going there. Old Republic navigation databases began disappearing or being restricted. Taryn started keeping copies. Every chart. Every beacon. Every forgotten freight corridor. She didn't know why. She simply disliked information disappearing because someone in authority decided ordinary people shouldn't possess it. Eventually those records became one of the most comprehensive private collections of obscure hyperspace information she knew existed. Joining the Wayfarer's Promise Taryn first hears about the position through spacer contacts. Someone has acquired a substantial independent cargo vessel and needs a navigator. The ship is legitimate. The pay is good. Very good. The captain apparently doesn't ask unnecessary questions. Better still. Taryn arranges to meet Allore Titha expecting another wealthy merchant who has bought more ship than she knows how to operate. Instead she finds a young woman who knows considerably more about starships, danger and keeping secrets than Taryn initially expects. Allore is equally cautious. She doesn't tell Taryn about the Jedi. She doesn't tell her about Shia Teraan. She doesn't explain exactly why remaining difficult for Imperial authorities to track is suddenly extremely important. She simply explains what she needs. A navigator capable of taking the Wayfarer's Promise through the galaxy without always relying upon standard commercial hyperspace routes. Taryn considers the offer. Then she sees the ship. "That's yours?" Allore confirms that it is. Taryn stares at the Wayfarer's Promise for several seconds. "You should have started with that." She accepts. Discovering the Family Taryn initially assumes Allore's three younger companions are passengers. That misunderstanding lasts approximately a day. Illenya is old enough that Taryn initially treats her much like another junior crew member. Kyle and Miran are another matter. It slowly becomes apparent that Allore isn't transporting the children. She's raising them. Protecting them. And whatever Allore is running from involves all four siblings. Taryn doesn't immediately ask questions. Spacer etiquette is built around knowing when someone's history is none of your business. But she starts quietly modifying their routes. Fewer Imperial systems. Fewer major ports. More secondary refuelling stations. More contingency jumps entered into the navigation computer before they're needed. She never tells Allore. Allore eventually notices anyway. |

Her possessions include: Navigation datapad Personal collection of navigation charts Several outdated hyperspace-route databases Compact tool kit Comlink Civilian blaster pistol Brown flight jacket Small collection of physical star charts A battered metal mug she has owned for years The navigation information is easily the most valuable thing she owns. Some of it would also require uncomfortable explanations if Imperial Customs ever examined it closely. |
Skills and Equipment
| Personal Weapons | Personal Weapons Compact civilian blaster pistol — carried in a hip holster when away from the ship. Small utility knife — primarily a tool rather than a weapon. Taryn is competent with a blaster but is not a trained combatant. Given the choice between fighting and finding an escape route, she will choose the escape route. | |
| Force Sensitivity | No | |
| Languages Spoken | Galactic Basic — Native/Fluent Bocce — Fluent; learned through years working aboard freighters and dealing with multicultural crews and ports. Huttese — Conversational; enough to negotiate, understand threats and conduct routine business in Outer Rim ports. Binary — Basic understanding; Taryn can understand common astromech and navigation-droid responses but cannot speak Binary herself. Understands a considerable amount of spacer slang, trade jargon and regional terminology picked up during her years travelling the galaxy. | |
| Personal Equipment | Personal navigation datapad containing Taryn's working astrogation files. Portable nav-computer interface for connecting her datapad to compatible civilian navigation systems. Private collection of old Republic-era star charts and hyperspace-route data. Copies of obsolete and discontinued navigation beacon records. Handheld scanner. Compact civilian comlink. Compact tool kit containing equipment for minor navigation-console and computer repairs. Civilian blaster pistol with spare power packs. Utility knife/multitool. Small glowrod. Battered brown spacer jacket with numerous internal pockets. Flight gloves. Protective goggles used during maintenance work and in particularly unpleasant ports. Credit chip and several small denominations of physical currency for places where electronic transactions are best avoided. A battered metal drinking mug that has travelled aboard almost every ship she has served on. A small collection of physical star charts, including several routes that no longer appear on standard Imperial navigation databases. |
