| Description |  The Ship's Office handles much of the less glamorous but essential work required to keep the Wayfarer's Promise operating as an independent commercial vessel. Cargo manifests, passenger records, docking permits, customs declarations, contracts, invoices and port documentation all eventually find their way through this compartment. Several computer terminals provide access to the ship's administrative systems, allowing crew members to prepare manifests, maintain voyage records and process the considerable amount of documentation generated whenever the vessel enters or leaves a port. Information can be transferred directly to the communications systems for submission to local authorities or commercial clients. Secure storage is provided for physical documents, credit chips, data cylinders and other records that cannot simply be left on the general shipboard network. Particularly sensitive material can be locked away separately, with access restricted to authorised crew. The office also provides a practical place to conduct routine business with passengers, merchants and cargo representatives without bringing them into the Captain's Ready Room or other command spaces. Contracts can be reviewed, identities verified and shipping arrangements finalised here. There is little decoration beyond whatever the crew has accumulated over time. Desks, storage cabinets and terminals occupy most of the available space, and there always seems to be another manifest waiting to be checked. For all the excitement associated with travelling the galaxy, the Ship's Office is a persistent reminder that keeping the Wayfarer's Promise flying requires almost as much paperwork as it does fuel. |
